   Carve the eye with a small detail tool, peeling the ring around it bright and leaving a small untouched dot for the dark pupil. Shape the beak by peeling the lighter upper surface and leaving the hooked tip and mouth line as darker skin. Do not cut all the way through anywhere; these accents read best as shaded contrast, not open holes. Clean up stray edges with the tip of a paring knife.

   Light it and photograph

   Set a battery LED puck or string inside, never a candle, since the thin peeled skin can scorch. Test in a dark room and deepen any feathers that look flat until the head pops bright. Rub a little petroleum jelly on cut surfaces to slow drying and keep the tones crisp. Shoot photos both in daylight and lit, since a shaded portrait like this reads well either way.
