The Broad-Brow Frankenstein Bust Pumpkin Carving Idea

Prep the pumpkin and pick your side

Choose a tall pumpkin with a broad, flat front face to hold this wide bust design. Cut a lid from the bottom rather than the top so the stem stays intact and the pumpkin sits stable. Scoop the inside clean and thin the front wall to about one inch so your saw glides through easily. A thinner wall makes narrow scar and tooth strips much less likely to crack.

Transfer the design

Print or draw the Frankenstein bust and tape it snugly to the front of the pumpkin, snipping the paper edges so it lies flat on the curve. Poke the outlines with a transfer tool or pushpin, spacing the dots close together along the thin scar and tooth lines. Peel the paper and connect the dots lightly with a marker so you can read the design clearly. Double check that the brow, jawline, and shoulders are marked as areas to leave uncut.

Carve the narrow scar segments first

Start with the thin stitched-scar slits across the forehead while all the surrounding rind is still solid for support. Use a fine detail saw and make slow, straight passes, keeping each slit short and separated by little bridges of skin. Do not remove the large eye openings yet, because the scar strips lean on that uncut rind while the saw is working nearby. Take your time and clear each slit fully before moving to the next.

Open the eyes and mouth

Now cut the two angled eye panels, keeping the sharp inner points crisp for that aggressive glare. Move to the mouth and saw around the frown, then carefully cut between each tooth so the jagged strips read clearly. Leave the vertical tooth bars connected top and bottom so they stay strong. Cut these large openings last, after the delicate scar work is safely done.

Shade the brow, jaw, and shoulders

The heavy brow, the jawline, the neck bolts, and the shoulder outline should stay as darker features. Use a lino or ribbon tool to skin-peel a shallow layer where you want a dim orange glow, such as the cheek shading or the outer face edges. Leave the deepest shadow zones as untouched skin for full contrast. This peeling is what gives the face its three-dimensional, sculpted look without cutting all the way through.

Light it and photograph

Set a battery LED puck at mouth level inside so the light pushes hardest behind the exposed teeth for a menacing effect. Skip candles, since the heat can scorch your thin strips and the flame is a fire risk. Test in a dark room and rotate the light until the eyes and mouth glow evenly. Snap your photo slightly off to one side so the angled brow and shoulders catch a little shadow.
