The Mellow Cannabis Leaf

From pumpkin to porch

1. 1

   Chill and open the pumpkin

Pick a tall, evenly shaped pumpkin with a smooth front for the leaf. Cut a lid from the bottom instead of the top so the stem stays as a natural handle, then scrape the inside wall behind the design down to about one inch thick. A thinner wall makes angled cuts cleaner and lets more light through. Chilling the pumpkin for an hour first keeps the flesh firm.

2. 2

   Transfer the leaf pattern

Center the seven-point leaf on the front and tape a home-printed stencil in place, smoothing it flat over the curve. Poke along every edge with a pushpin or scoring tool, spacing dots close together on the serrated tips so the fine points stay accurate. Peel the paper and connect the dots lightly with a marker if the outline is hard to read. Take your time here, since a symmetrical layout is what sells the shape.

3. 3

Cut the tips and inner valleys first

Using a thin-blade pumpkin saw, start with the small detailed areas: the pointed leaflet tips and the deep V-shaped valleys where two leaflets meet. Keep the blade straight up and down and let it saw gently rather than forcing it. Working the tricky spots while the surrounding flesh is still fully supported prevents cracks. Clear each little piece before moving on.

4. 4

   Open the main leaflet shapes

Once the fine points are done, cut out the seven larger leaflet openings, working from the center leaflet outward. Support each section with your free hand as you finish it so the wedge does not snap off early and tear a neighbor. Push the cut pieces inward and out rather than pulling them forward. This order keeps the narrow bridges of skin between the leaflets from breaking.

5. 5

   Refine the serrated edges

Go back over every edge and shave the inside cuts at a slight outward angle so the wall is thinner at the back than the front. This flares the light and makes the leaf glow brighter. For a soft halo, lightly skin-peel a thin border just outside the cut edges instead of cutting through. Clean up any ragged points with a small detail knife.

6. 6

   Light it and photograph

Set a battery LED puck or a short string of LEDs inside, never a candle, since the deep cutout channels heat. Position the light low and slightly back so it fills all seven leaflets evenly. Place the pumpkin on a porch bench or step and shoot at dusk for the warmest contrast. Rotate the light until the tips glow as brightly as the center.
