Open the pumpkin and clean it out

Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top, so the design face stays intact and the pumpkin sits flat. Scoop out all the seeds and stringy pulp with a sturdy scraper. Keep working the inside of the front wall until it feels even and light passes through when you hold a flashlight behind it. A clean, dry interior makes the later cuts predictable.

Thin the front wall to about an inch

On the inside face where the leaf will go, shave the wall down to roughly one inch thick using a loop or ribbon tool. An even thickness matters more than getting super thin, since uneven walls make the saw wander. This step is the difference between clean points and cracked tips. Take your time and check thickness by pressing a fingertip against both sides.

Transfer the leaf pattern

Tape your seven-point leaf stencil flat against the thinned area, easing out wrinkles around the pumpkin's curve. Poke the outline with a pin or transfer tool, following every serrated edge and the thin central stem closely. Space your dots a little tighter along the narrow points so the shape stays readable once the paper comes off. Peel your stencil and connect any gaps with a marker so you have a continuous guide line.

Saw the leaf as one connected opening

Start with the innermost, tightest points near the center and work outward, using a fine detail saw held straight into the wall. Cut each leaflet as part of one continuous silhouette so the whole leaf lifts out together at the end. Support the piece with your free hand as the opening grows, and save the widest lower sections for last so the wall stays rigid while you handle the delicate tips. Ease into every serration slowly rather than forcing the blade around corners.

Clean the edges and test the glow

Gently push the cutout free and trim any ragged spots from the inside so the light spreads evenly. Run a knife tip along each serrated edge to sharpen the leaf profile. Drop in a battery LED puck, ideally a warm amber one, to check that every point reads clearly. Avoid open candles, since the thin points can scorch and the flame heat weakens narrow bridges.

Stage and photograph

Set the pumpkin at eye level near a window at dusk so the interior glow contrasts with soft outside light. Dim the room and let the LED do the work, adding a second small light behind the pumpkin if the shape looks flat. Shoot slightly below center to keep the full leaf in frame. Take a few photos before the cut edges start to dry and curl.
