Prep the pumpkin and pick a smooth face

Choose a wide pumpkin with a flat, blemish-free front for all the fine detail. Cut a lid from the bottom or back rather than the top so the stem stays intact for looks. Scoop the inside clean and thin the carving wall to about one inch with a scraper. A thinner wall makes the many small cuts far easier and cleaner.

Transfer and tape the pattern firmly

Print your vine-and-leaf heart pattern sized to cover most of the face. Tape the paper down tight on all sides so it cannot shift, then poke the outlines with a transfer tool or push pin. Add extra tape around the delicate vine tips where the paper wants to lift. Peel the paper and connect any faint dotted lines with a marker before you cut.

Support the pumpkin from inside with your free hand as you saw. Take breaks so your control stays steady on these detailed shapes.

Cut the curling vine heart last

Save the two long vine curves that form the heart frame and the little end curls for the very end. These are the thinnest openings, so cut them once the surrounding shapes are done and there is nothing left to knock loose. Follow each curl in one smooth motion, clearing short segments at a time. Gently clean any ragged edges with the tip of your blade.

Light it and take the photo
