   Shave the headstone to glow

   Using a ribbon or lino tool, peel the skin off the entire headstone area inside the arch, working around the cross. Take the flesh down evenly until you see it start to lighten, then test with your LED to check the glow. Leave the cross fully untouched so it stays dark and thick. Go slowly and shave a little at a time, since you cannot put pumpkin back.

   Cut the cracks last

   Now cut the jagged crack lines all the way through the shell so they read as the brightest lines on the stone. Keep each crack narrow and leave short uncut bridges where a line would otherwise isolate a chunk of shell. Cutting these openings last keeps the panel rigid while you do the fine shaving. Clean up the edges with a small knife for crisp lines.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop in a bright LED puck or a couple of tea light LEDs for a strong, even glow. Turn off the room lights and check that the cross reads dark against the lit stone. Adjust the light position if the top of the arch looks dim. Shoot your photo in near darkness so the contrast between the glowing stone and the black cross really pops.
