The Curled Tree and Spiderweb Pumpkin Carving Idea

Prep the pumpkin and pick a flat panel

Choose a tall pumpkin with a wide, smooth front so the tree and web have room to spread. Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top, which keeps the display face clean and makes it easy to set over an LED. Scrape the inside wall behind your design down to about one inch thick so your saw glides through evenly. A thinner wall also lets the peeled areas glow better.

Transfer the full scene

Tape your stencil smoothly over the front, clipping the edges so it hugs the curves without wrinkling. Poke the outlines with a transfer tool or a pin, following every curl of the tree, the round web, and the little gravestone. Space your dots closer together on the tight spirals so the shapes stay readable. Peel the paper and connect any faint sections with a washable marker before you cut.

Carve the fine curls and branches first

Start with the smallest tree curls and the thin branch tips while the shell is at full strength. Use a fine detail saw and let the blade do the work with light, steady pressure. Keep short bridges of skin where two curls nearly touch so nothing snaps free. Save the widest part of the trunk for later, since a big opening early on weakens everything around it.

Cut the spiderweb spoke by spoke

Carve each radiating spoke as a single straight pass from the outer ring toward the center, then stop just short of the hub. Once the spokes are scored, remove the triangular sections between them one at a time. Working this way keeps the center hub supported so it will not split under the saw. Leave the very middle as a small solid point to anchor the whole web.

Open the trunk and gravestone last

Now cut the wide swept trunk, which is your largest opening. Support the shell with your free hand as you finish this pass so the surrounding curls do not flex and crack. Cut the little RIP gravestone as a simple pierced shape, keeping the letters chunky so they hold. Gently push each piece inward or outward and clean the edges with the tip of your saw.

Light it and photograph

Drop in a battery LED and set it toward the back so light spreads evenly through the tree and web. Warm white or amber bulbs give that glowing orange look through the cutouts. Photograph in a dim room at dusk so the pierced areas read brightly against the dark skin. Rub a little petroleum jelly on the cut edges to slow drying and keep the design crisp for a few extra days.
