Prep the pumpkin and plan the layout

Pick a pumpkin with a wide, fairly flat front face so the cactus and sun have room to sit apart. Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top so the stem stays intact for looks. Scoop the inside until the front wall is about an inch thick, which makes piercing easier and lets more light through. Sketch or transfer your four shapes and step back to check the spacing before any cutting begins.

Mark the four shapes

Tape your stencil to the front and poke the outlines with a pin or use a transfer wheel to dot the lines onto the skin. Keep the cactus trunk centered and vertical, with the two arms curving up symmetrically. Place the sun circle up and to one side, and set the two small dunes low at the base. Double check that the trunk and arms leave solid skin between them so the design holds together.

Cut the cactus trunk first

Start with the tall central trunk since it anchors the whole scene. Use a small carving saw and gentle, steady strokes, letting the blade do the work instead of forcing it. Cut the long vertical sides first, then connect them at top and bottom, and push the piece out from the inside. Adults should handle the sharp tools here.

Add the two arms and dunes

Carve the left and right arms next, following the curved outlines up from the trunk. Keep a little skin between each arm and the trunk so nothing weakens or breaks. Then cut the two low dune shapes at the base as simple mounded openings. Work slowly at the tight inside corners where the arms meet the trunk.

Carve the sun circle smooth

Save the round sun for a controlled finish. Instead of twisting the saw, rotate the pumpkin steadily against the blade to keep the curve even. Take small bites and check the circle from a step back, trimming any flat spots. A clean, round sun makes the whole southwestern look feel finished.

Light it and photograph

Drop in a battery LED light or two, warm white or amber for a desert glow. Set the pumpkin on a porch step at dusk and check that all four shapes read clearly from a few feet away. If any edge looks ragged, trim it with a paring knife. Snap your photo while the surrounding light is still low for the best contrast.
