Work slowly around the curve of the neck since it is the most eye-catching line.

   Peel the teardrop feathers from the outside in

   Start with the outermost teardrops and peel the skin off each one so they glow dim and soft. Leave a thin ridge of skin between neighboring feathers so each shape stays distinct and the surface stays strong. Keep the teardrops symmetrical by matching pairs across the fan. Because you move inward, you always have solid pumpkin to brace against.

   Cut the eye spots for full light

   Now switch to a fine saw and cut all the way through the center of each teardrop to make the bright eye spots. Cut these small openings last so the wall stayed rigid while you did the delicate peeling. Keep each hole a little smaller than the peeled teardrop around it so a glowing halo remains. Ease the blade in and out gently to avoid cracking the thin bridges.

   Light it and photograph

   Set a battery LED puck or string inside, never a candle, since the enclosed shape and thin walls do best with cool light. Try it both in daylight, where the peeled shapes read as pale carving, and at dusk, where the cut eye spots glow. A garden bench or porch step makes a clean backdrop. Wipe the cut edges and mist them with water if you want them to stay fresh for photos.
