Pick and prep the pumpkin

Choose a pumpkin with one broad, smooth face and no soft spots. Wipe it down with a damp cloth and let it dry fully, since paint grips a clean dry surface far better. Set it on a towel or newspaper so it does not roll while you work. Because this is a no-carve project, the pumpkin stays whole and will last for weeks.

Sketch the ghost with chalk

Draw a rounded head that tapers into a body with two short arms, one raised in a wave. Give the bottom a gentle wavy hem so it reads as a floating sheet. Chalk wipes off easily, so redraw until the shape feels balanced and centered on the face. Keep it large and simple, which is what makes this friendly for kids to help with.

Lay down the first white coat

Fill the whole ghost shape with white acrylic craft paint using a soft flat brush. Work in one direction and do not worry that the orange peeks through on this first pass. Let it dry completely, usually about twenty to thirty minutes, before touching it again. This is a safe, mess-friendly step where toddlers can help under supervision.

Add the second coat for solid white

Paint a second even coat so the ghost looks bright and the orange no longer ghosts through. Tidy the outline with the tip of the brush to keep the edges crisp and curvy. Let this coat dry fully before adding any face, or the black will smear into wet white. Two thin coats look far cleaner than one thick, gloppy one.

Draw the face

Once the white is bone dry, add two oval dot eyes and a small smiling mouth with a black paint pen. Keep the eyes spaced a little apart and set the smile just below them for that happy look. A paint pen gives you more control than a brush for these tiny shapes. If a line goes wobbly, let it dry and dab a touch of white over it to fix.

Seal and display

Give everything a few hours to cure, then brush on a thin coat of clear matte sealer if you want it to resist smudges and last all month. Set the finished pumpkin on a table or porch shelf where the white face catches the light. For a soft evening glow, tuck a battery LED tea light nearby rather than in the pumpkin, since it is not hollowed. Snap a photo in daylight to show off those crisp edges.
