Clean and dry the surface

Wipe the pumpkin down with a damp cloth to remove dirt and any waxy residue, then dry it completely. Paint grabs best on a clean, dry skin. Pick the smoothest, flattest face for your lettering so the letters do not warp over ribs. Set the pumpkin on newspaper to catch drips.

Chalk your layout

Lightly sketch the two dot eyes near the top center, then chalk the word BOO in tall, rounded letters below. Space the three letters evenly and check that the whole word sits centered on the face. Chalk wipes away easily, so adjust until the spacing looks right. Step back and view it from a few feet to confirm it reads clearly.

Paint the first white coat

Using a flat or round brush, fill in each letter with white acrylic. This first coat will look thin and streaky over the orange, and that is normal. Keep the paint even and do not overload the brush. Let it dry fully before moving on, usually fifteen to thirty minutes.

Add second and third coats

Apply a second coat once the first is dry, then a third if the orange still shows through. Two or three thin layers give a cleaner, brighter white than one thick glob. Let each coat dry completely so the letters do not smear or lift. Clean up any wobbly edges with a small brush at this stage.

Paint the eyes

Once the letters are dry, add the two small black dot eyes with a round brush or the end of a paintbrush handle dipped in black acrylic. Keep them small, evenly spaced, and level with each other. A single clean coat is usually enough for solid black. Let everything cure for an hour before handling.

Stage and photograph

Set the finished pumpkin on a bench or step where a porch light or nearby LED can catch the white lettering. Angle the painted face toward the light source and your walkway. If you want a soft glow, place a battery LED beside it rather than inside, since this design is not hollowed. Snap your photo at dusk when the porch light adds warmth.
