The Boo-ze Ghost Bartender

From pumpkin to porch

1. 1

Prep the pumpkin and pick your light

Choose a large pumpkin with a broad, flat front so the whole bar scene fits without wrapping around the curve. Cut a wide opening in the back rather than the top so you can reach the thin shaded areas and drop in an LED puck light. Scrape the inside wall behind the design down to about one inch thick so light passes through evenly. Skip candles entirely, since this design has delicate shaved areas that need steady, cool light.

2. 2

   Transfer the design

Print or draw the scene at the size of your pumpkin front, keeping the ghost bartender in the middle, the shelves and bottles to each side, and BOO-ZE across the bottom. Tape the pattern smoothly and poke closely spaced transfer dots along every line, including the martini glasses and letter edges. Peel the paper and connect the dots lightly with a washable marker. Double-check that the letter spacing reads clearly before any blade touches the skin.

3. 3

   Shade the ghost and background

Using a ribbon or gouge tool, peel away only the outer skin on the ghost's body, arms, and flowing shape so it glows a soft dim orange. Vary your depth, going a little thinner on the face and the shaker for a brighter highlight, and leaving the surrounding background skin untouched for contrast. Work slowly and keep your non-cutting hand behind the tool, never in its path. This shading is the heart of the design, so take your time building the gradients.

4. 4

Etch the shelves, bottles, and details

Lightly peel the shelf lines and bottle shapes on each side so they read as a soft-glowing back bar. Keep thin dividers between bottles intact as bridges so nothing collapses. Shade the little jack-o-lantern and lemon wheel garnish just enough to suggest them without full cuts. Leave narrow strips of untouched skin as outlines so each object stays crisp against the glow.

5. 5

Cut the glasses and letters last

Now switch to a fine saw and make your full cutouts: the two martini glasses and the chunky BOO-ZE letters below. Pierce these nearly or fully through so they throw the brightest light and the pun reads from across the yard. Cut the enclosed centers of letters like the O carefully, leaving small bridges if needed to hold their shape. Always save these big openings for last so the pumpkin wall stays strong while you do the fine shading.

6. 6

   Light it and photograph

Set an LED light or two inside and test in a dark room, adjusting placement so the ghost and glasses glow without hot spots. Blot any moisture from the shaded areas so the surface stays even and bright. Stage it on a bar cart or step with a few real bottles or mums nearby for a party feel. Photograph at dusk with the porch lights low to capture the warm gradients.
