Stay Spooky Ghost Lettering Pumpkin Carving

   Pick your pumpkin and plan the layout

   Choose a pumpkin with a wide, fairly flat front so the arc of STAY SPOOKY reads clearly from a few feet away. Wipe the surface clean and dry. Print the phrase, ghosts, star, and swoosh at actual size, then hold the paper against the curve to confirm nothing wraps too far around the sides. Trim the template so the words sit centered and the ghosts have room on each flank.

   Open a lid or backdoor and clean out

   An adult should cut a lid around the stem or, better for even light, a hole in the back. Angle the cut inward so the piece rests without falling through. Scoop out the seeds and pulp, then scrape the inside of the front wall until it is about one inch thick. A thinner front wall makes the etched glow much brighter and easier to carve.

   Tape and transfer the template

   Tape the paper flat, snipping small relief cuts around the edges so it hugs the curve without wrinkles. Use a poking tool or pushpin to trace every letter outline, the ghost bodies, the star, and the swoosh with closely spaced dots. Go slowly around tight curves like the S and the ghost tails so the shapes stay crisp. Peel the paper and connect the dots lightly with a marker if the pattern looks faint.

   Etch the letters and ghosts

   Switch to a lino or ribbon gouge and remove only the top skin inside each letter, the ghost bodies, the star, and the swoosh. Aim for the same shallow depth everywhere so the glow reads as one even tone in daylight and at night. Keep the dark background skin fully intact around each shape, since that contrast is what makes the words pop. Work in small strokes and re-check depth often rather than digging deep in one spot.

   Cut the few true openings last

   Once all the etching is done and the wall is still firm, cut fully through only the smallest accents, like the ghost eyes and mouths, for a brighter pop of light. Keep these openings tiny and rounded so the friendly faces stay structurally sound. Do not cut through any letters or you will lose the clean typography. Clean up any ragged edges with the tip of your knife.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop in a battery LED light or two for safe, steady brightness, never a candle. Set the pumpkin on your front step or dessert table and dim the surrounding lights to see the etched glow. Snap your photo slightly off-center so both ghosts and the full phrase stay in frame. A little petroleum jelly on cut edges helps it last a few extra days.
