   Peel the midtones with a rounded scraper

   Use a rounded scraper or ribbon tool to remove just the outer skin across the cheeks, brow, and neck fur, exposing the pale flesh for a soft mid glow. Keep your strokes short and follow the direction the fur grows. Leave the darkest markings and ear shadows fully untouched so they read as deep brown. Take off a little at a time, since you can always scrape deeper but cannot put skin back.

   Carve fur detail with a fine V-gouge

   Switch to a fine V-gouge to cut the individual hairs around the muzzle, ears, and eyes, scraping a touch deeper on the brightest highlights so they catch the most light. Angle your strokes to flow outward from the nose and down the neck for a natural coat. Define the eyes and the tongue as your deepest cuts, but stop short of piercing all the way through to keep the portrait soft, not harsh. Blend the edges between zones so the tones fade rather than jump.

   Light it and photograph at dusk

   Drop a warm white LED puck inside and set the pumpkin back on its base. The scraped fur will glow amber while the untouched markings stay dark, giving the face its depth. Shoot photos both in daylight and after dark to show how the portrait shifts. Mist the surface lightly and refrigerate overnight to slow drying if you want it to last.
