Do not cut all the way through anywhere in this step.

   Etch the four legs more lightly than the body so they stay darker and anchor the dog to the ground. Define the muzzle, the pricked ear, and a small bright highlight for the eye by shaving those tiny areas a little deeper. Leave a thin dark line of untouched skin around the whole outline so the figure stands out against the glow. Step back often to check the balance of light and dark.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop a battery LED puck inside and aim it toward the etched panel, never a candle, since the thin shaved wall can scorch. View it in a dark room and touch up any spots that look too flat by shaving a hair deeper. Set it on a porch step at dusk for the warm backlit look. A dab of petroleum jelly on the cut edges slows drying if you want it to last a few extra days.
