Marigold the Golden Profile

From pumpkin to porch

1. 1

Pick a smooth pumpkin and transfer the profile

Choose a pumpkin with a broad, even face and few ribs so your shading stays smooth. Tape your golden retriever profile stencil flat against the surface, smoothing out wrinkles as you go. Poke the outline and the main fur lines with a pin or transfer tool so you have a dotted map to follow. Keep the design centered on the fullest part of the pumpkin where a front bench viewer will see it head on.

2. 2

   Score the outlines first

With a small detail knife, lightly trace the outer edge of the head, the ears, and the chest. Do not cut deep, just break the skin so your scraped areas have a clean border. Score the separate shapes for the eye, nose, and open mouth too. These shallow lines keep your later shading from bleeding past where you want it.

3. 3

   Peel the brightest areas

Use a ribbon loop tool to remove the outer skin on the muzzle, forehead, and cheek where the dog looks palest. Scrape deeper in these spots to reach lighter, moister flesh that glows almost cream in daylight. Work in the direction the fur grows so the texture looks natural. Take your time and step back often to check the shape reads as a dog.

4. 4

Build the feathered fur with varied depth

Switch to lighter, shallower strokes for the ears and the fur along the chest and neck. Leaving these areas a little thicker keeps them darker, which creates the soft feathered contrast against the bright face. Flick the loop tool outward in short strokes to suggest individual strands. Vary your pressure so no two clumps look identical.

5. 5

Detail the eye, nose, and happy mouth

Leave the eye, nostril, and the line of the open mouth as untouched skin so they stay dark and define the expression. Scrape a tiny bright highlight beside the eye and on the nose to give it life. For the tongue, peel a shallow patch so it reads slightly lighter than the surrounding skin. These small contrasts are what make the portrait feel warm and alive.

6. 6

Seal it and set it on the bench

Wipe the etched surface clean and rub it with a little vegetable oil or petroleum jelly to slow drying and keep the pale tones vivid. This is a daylight design, so no light is needed, though a small LED tucked nearby at dusk adds a soft glow. Place it on a shaded bench out of direct sun to make it last longer. Snap a photo the first day when the contrast is at its sharpest.
