Our tips for carving a similar design

The large heart-shaped nose is the centerpiece, and its symmetry is the main technical challenge. Print a heart template at the right scale, transfer it to the pumpkin, and cut it before adding any other features. From pumpkin to porch

  1. Hollow and prep

How do I keep both lobes of the heart symmetrical?

Using a printed template is by far the most reliable approach. If you are drawing freehand, fold a piece of paper in half, draw one lobe, cut it out, and unfold it for a perfectly mirrored shape. Transfer that to the pumpkin with a pin tool.

The bottom point of the heart is very sharp and thin. Will it hold?

The bottom point does not need to be attached to anything since the heart is a fully cut-out aperture. The thin point of rind still inside the pumpkin hollow is fine. If the point looks ragged after cutting, use a small blade to trim it cleanly from the inside.

How far apart should the freckle holes be from the smile?

Leave at least half an inch between any freckle hole and the edge of the smile opening. Holes placed too close to the smile edge can cause the cheek rind to crack when you cut or handle the pumpkin. Mark all eight positions before drilling any of them so you can adjust spacing if one is too close.
