Brush away shavings often to check that the tone is even.

Step back and view it from a few feet to catch uneven areas.

   Rub a thin coat of petroleum jelly or a spritz of preservative over the etched area to slow browning and lock in the gold tone. Snap your photo within a day or two, since etched flesh dulls faster than deep cuts.
