Marina the Wave-Swept Mermaid

From pumpkin to porch

1. 1

Prep the pumpkin and transfer the design

Pick a tall, smooth pumpkin with a broad flat face and enough shoulder to wrap the tail around the side. Cut a lid from the bottom or back so the front stays intact, then scrape the inside wall on the carving side down to about one inch thick for even glow. Tape your stencil in place and poke or trace the main outlines, marking which zones are darkest, mid, and brightest. Take your time here, since an accurate map is what makes the shading read later.

2. 2

Etch the face and body first

Use a small loop or ribbon tool to gently skin the surface skin off the face, chest, and arms, leaving them raised and only lightly thinned. Round the cheek, brow, and shoulder softly so light suggests form instead of harsh lines. Keep these areas the shallowest cuts on the whole pumpkin, since the body should read warm and solid, not blown out. Wipe away pulp often so you can judge the true tone as you go.

3. 3

   Sculpt the flowing hair

Carve the hair as long ribbon strands, skinning deeper along the flowing highlights and leaving thin raised ridges between them for shadow. Vary the depth so a few strands glow bright while others stay dim, which gives the cascade movement. Keep strands connected to each other and to the surrounding skin so nothing snaps loose. Let the hair sweep across the body to tie the composition together.

4. 4

   Texture the scaled tail

Map the tail curving around the side, then cut overlapping crescent scales in staggered rows using a small U gouge. Skin each scale slightly deeper at its lower edge so it catches light and looks layered. Keep the fin tips as thinned relief rather than open cuts so the delicate shapes stay strong. Step back often to check that the rows follow the tail's bend.

5. 5

Carve the waves and deepest glow

Skin the wave crests to a bright mid tone and push the troughs between them deeper for contrast. Save any true see-through openings for last, placing a few small ones in the brightest wave curls and behind the tail to add sparkle. Cutting these big openings last keeps the pumpkin wall rigid while you do the fine work. Clean all edges from the inside so the light spreads smoothly.

6. 6

Light it and stage the display

Set one or two battery LED lights inside, never a candle, and aim them upward toward the face and tail. Place the pumpkin on a step so the wraparound tail reads from the walkway below. Photograph it at dusk when the ambient light still shows the surrounding scene. Mist the cut surfaces with water and refrigerate overnight between showings to keep the relief crisp.
