   Detail the wing tips and beak

   Move up to the feathered wing edges and the open beak, cutting the small jagged notches that give the raven its ragged, dramatic outline. Keep these edge cuts shallow and precise so no single feather point is left dangling. If a wing tip feels thin, leave a narrow uncut bridge connecting it to the neighboring feather for support. Cut the open beak gap now while the surrounding shell is still strong.

   Open the large body and wings last

   Now remove the big center sections of the body and wings, cutting from the middle outward toward the detailed edges you already made. Work in a few smaller panels rather than one giant piece so you never lose your grip on the pumpkin. Push each cut piece gently inward and out to avoid snapping a wing tip. Clean up all the inside edges with your knife tip for a crisp glowing outline.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop in a bright LED puck or a couple of battery tea lights, skipping open flame near all these large openings. Set the lights low and toward the back so the beam spreads evenly across the wide wingspan. Test it in a dark room and add a second light if the wing tips look dim. Photograph against a plain dark background so the raven silhouette reads sharp and bold.
