Leave the skin between lines untouched so the head reads as a solid dark silhouette against the glow. Step back often to check that the lines still flow together into one shape.

   Once the fine work is done, go back and gently widen only the openings that need more light, such as the broader collar gap or the muzzle. Save any large removals for the very end, because a face full of thin cuts weakens fast under pressure. Support the pumpkin from underneath, not by gripping the carved panel. Trim ragged inside edges at a slight bevel to brighten each line.

   Drop in a battery LED puck or a short string of warm LED lights and skip open flame, which can scorch these narrow channels. Set the pumpkin on a neutral runner or wood table and dim the room so the lines pop. Rotate it until the muzzle and ear read clearly from your camera angle. Shoot slightly off to the side to catch the profile at its most recognizable.
