   Cut the star last

   Draw the five-point star beside the moon and cut it fully through with a fine saw, going point to point in straight strokes. Cutting this opening last keeps the pumpkin rigid while you do the detailed relief work. Clean the star edges from the inside so light spills evenly. Because it is a full cutout, it will read as the brightest element next to the dim, glowing moon.

   Light it and photograph

   Set a battery LED puck inside, never a candle, since the shaded areas are thin and can scorch. Test in a dark room and adjust the light position so both the face and star glow. Seal cut edges with a thin coat of petroleum jelly to slow drying. Place it on a porch bench at dusk and shoot slightly off to the side to catch the relief shadows.
