   Move down through the shoulders, belly, and the four legs, keeping the legs as narrow standing cutouts rather than one giant hole. Leave thin slivers of skin between the legs to support the body above. Add the grass blades along the meadow as small pointed cuts, keeping each one attached at the base. Cut the largest openings last so the pumpkin holds its shape throughout.

   Leave the pine trees as dark islands

   The small pine trees on the left should stay as uncarved skin so they read as dark shapes against the glow. Cut around them cleanly, leaving the tree silhouettes untouched. This layering is what gives the scene its sense of distance.

   Drop in a battery LED light or a puck light rather than a candle, which is safer and shows off the fine cuts. Set it low and slightly forward so the light spreads evenly across the wide body. Take your photo at dusk on a porch step for that warm ambient glow. If any bridge looks weak, dab a little petroleum jelly on the cut edges to slow drying and keep it from curling.
