Prep the pumpkin and transfer the pattern

Pick a tall pumpkin with a smooth, flat front panel so the wide antler rack fits without wrapping around a ridge. Cut a lid from the bottom or back rather than the top so the stem stays intact above the design. Scrape the inside wall behind the face down to about one inch thick for easier cutting. Tape your stencil on flat and poke or trace the full outline before you cut anything.

Carve the antler tines first

Start with the thinnest branches while the surrounding rind is fully supported. Work from the outer tip of each tine inward toward the main beam, using a small detail saw or craft knife. Take short, patient strokes and let the blade do the work so you do not snap a narrow point. Leave the wider face opening for last so the pumpkin stays rigid while you handle these fragile cuts.

Open the main antler beams and ears

Once the tines are free, cut the thicker beams that connect them and the two ears at the base of the rack. Keep every cut inside your traced line so the branches stay clean and even side to side. Support each section with your free hand as it releases so nothing tears. Clear the small waste pieces gently with the tip of your tool rather than pushing them through.

Cut the face and beard last

Save the large face and the pointed chin with its beard tuft for the end, since this is the biggest opening and removes the most support. Cut the smooth cheeks and muzzle first, then finish the jagged beard points at the bottom. Angle the blade straight in for crisp edges. Remove the full center piece carefully so the connected silhouette stays in one clean shape.

Light it and adjust the angle

Set a battery LED inside and tilt it slightly upward so light climbs into the upper antler branches, which are farthest from the center and go dim easily. A cool white or warm LED both work; try each and keep the one that spreads most evenly. Never use a candle with cutouts this delicate. If tips still look dark, add a second small light near the top of the cavity.

Clean up and photograph

Trim any fuzzy edges with a fresh blade and wipe the face clean. Rub a little petroleum jelly on the cut edges to slow drying and browning. Shoot the pumpkin in low light so the glow reads strongly against the dark rind. A plant shelf or porch step makes a nice woodland backdrop.
