Ornate Letter B Monogram Pumpkin With Autumn Leaves

From pumpkin to porch

1. 1

   Prep and plan the layout

Choose a large pumpkin with a flat, wide face and firm, unbruised skin. Scrape the inside wall on the carving side down to about one inch thick using a loop tool so light can eventually glow through peeled areas. Center your letter B template and tape it in place, then leave room on the sides for the trailing vines and maple leaves. Because this is a relief design, plan which parts stay raised before you cut anything.

2. 2

   Transfer the full design

Poke through your template along every line with a pin or transfer tool, marking the letter outline, the vine curls, and each leaf. Pull the paper and connect the dots with a washable marker so you can see the raised shapes clearly. Outline the letter and leaves as the areas that will stay tall. Mark the background field that will be lowered around them.

3. 3

   Score the raised edges

Using a small detail knife, make a clean vertical cut straight down along the outside edge of the B, the vines, and the leaves, going about a quarter inch deep. This defines the wall of every raised element so the background can drop away cleanly. Do not cut through the shell. Keep the blade steady and let an adult handle all knife work.

4. 4

   Lower the background field

Switch to a gouge or ribbon tool and slowly scoop out the marked background, peeling it down to a smooth, even depth around the letter and leaves. Work from the center of each open area toward your scored walls so you do not chip the raised edges. Keep the floor of the background uniform so it glows evenly when lit. This is the patient part, so take breaks and go shallow before going deeper.

5. 5

   Sculpt vines and leaf veins

On the raised leaves and vines, use a fine detail tool to peel just the top skin and carve shallow veins, curls, and a soft rounded edge. Skin-peeling here creates the warm mid tone that separates the leaves from the bright background. Round the letter edges slightly so the B reads like polished serif type. Bridge any thin vine tips back to a thicker section so nothing snaps off.

6. 6

   Light it and photograph

Set a battery LED puck or string inside, never a candle, since the thin recessed floor scorches easily. Test in a dark room and rotate the light until the background glows and the raised letter stays in soft shadow. Rub a little petroleum jelly on cut edges to slow drying and keep the detail crisp. Shoot your photo the same evening for the sharpest contrast.
