Prowler the Mountain Lion

From pumpkin to porch

1. 1

Pick a tall pumpkin and clean it out

This is an AI concept, so no real pumpkin exists yet, but a similar design works best on a big round pumpkin with a smooth front panel. Cut a lid or a back door and scoop the walls on the front down to about one inch thick. A thinner wall makes the wide background cuts easier and lets more light through. Wipe the front dry before you tape on your pattern.

2. 2

Transfer the pattern and mark your zones

Tape your stencil flat and poke the outline of the cat, the ground line, and the tail with a transfer tool or pushpin. Before you cut anything, shade in the areas that will stay solid: the whole cat body, its face, and the thin tail. Everything outside those shapes is background light. Marking zones now keeps you from accidentally cutting into the lion.

3. 3

Carve the small interior detail first

Start with the tightest openings between the cat's legs and any gaps under the belly. Use a small saw blade and take slow, straight strokes, letting the blade do the work. Doing the fiddly cuts while the pumpkin is still solid keeps the wall from flexing. Clear each piece gently so you do not crack a neighboring edge.

4. 4

Open the large background and ground windows

Now cut the big field around the cat and the rocky ground beneath its paws. Work from the center of each window outward and support the shell with your free hand as pieces drop free. Leave the little peaks of the rocky ground attached to the base so the front does not sag. These wide openings are what light the whole scene.

5. 5

Save the thin tail line for the very end

The sweeping tail is the most fragile part because it is a narrow ribbon of skin surrounded by light. Cut along both sides of it last, when the pumpkin has stopped shifting. Keep the blade vertical and make short overlapping cuts rather than one long drag. If a spot feels weak, leave a tiny bridge of skin and touch it up gently.

6. 6

Light it and shoot the photo

Set a battery LED inside, ideally two, so the wide ground opening and the leg gaps both glow evenly. Warm flicker LEDs sell the campfire look without any flame. Photograph it at dusk on a step or porch, low to the ground, so the crouched pose reads from the street. Mist the cut edges with water if they start to dry out.
