Take your time on the legs and tail, which are narrow and easy to over-shave.

   Define the outline and facial details

   Go back over the silhouette edge with a fine detail knife to sharpen the line between the peeled body and the untouched background. Cut shallow accent lines for the face, the whisker area, and the toe separations on each paw. Do not cut all the way through anywhere; these are shading cuts, not openings. Crisp edges here are what make the leopard read clearly from across the room.

   Stamp the rosette spots

   Switch to a small round gouge or a V-tool and press each rosette into the peeled body at your marked dots. Vary the size slightly and cluster them tighter along the spine, looser on the belly, to mimic real leopard patterning. Because you are only removing a thin layer, these spots will read as darker rings against the glowing body. Work slowly and keep your free hand behind the blade path.

   Light it and photograph

   Add a battery LED light inside through a small back hole, or set an LED puck behind the pumpkin to backlight the etch. Warm white light gives the copper tone described in the caption; unlit on a table runner it still reads beautifully. Dab any cut edges with petroleum jelly to slow drying. Shoot the photo slightly off to one side so the rosettes catch the light and pop.
