Prowling Mountain Lion Silhouette

From pumpkin to porch

1. 1

Pick a smooth-faced pumpkin and open the back

Choose a large pumpkin with one broad, flat-ish panel for the cat, since silhouettes need room to breathe. Cut an access hole in the back rather than the top so the front stays clean. Scrape the inside wall behind your design down to about one inch thick with a loop tool. A thinner wall makes peeling and etching much easier and more even.

2. 2

   Transfer the prowling cat outline

Tape your home-printed stencil over the smooth panel and poke the outline with a pin or transfer tool, following the back, legs, tail, and face. Keep dotted marks close together on the curves of the haunches and the tail so the shape stays smooth. Mark the eye and whisker lines separately so you remember those stay shallow. Peel the paper and connect the dots lightly with a washable marker if it helps.

3. 3

   Score the full outline first

With a fine detail knife, make one clean cut straight down along the entire edge of the cat, separating the animal from the background. Do not cut through the wall, just score the skin and a little of the flesh so you have a crisp boundary. Take your time on the ears, paws, and the tip of the tail. This clean line is what makes the finished silhouette read instantly.

4. 4

Peel the background to pale flesh

Now shave off the outer skin everywhere around the cat, staying outside your scored line. A ribbon or lino-style peeling tool works well for removing skin in smooth passes. Aim for an even depth so the whole surround turns the same soft pale orange. Leave the cat itself completely untouched so it reads as the dark shape.

5. 5

Etch the eyes, whiskers, and face lines

Switch to a fine tool and lightly scratch in the eye shapes, the line of the muzzle, and the long whiskers using shallow strokes. These lines should barely break the skin so they show as faint pale detail without cutting through. If you want the eyes to glow, you can carve those two small shapes all the way through at the very end. Save any full cutouts for last so the panel stays strong while you work.

6. 6

   Light it and photograph

Drop a battery LED puck inside and skip candles, since the enclosed shape traps heat. In a dim room the peeled background will glow soft orange while the cat stays dark and solid. This design also looks great unlit on a table for daytime fall decor or a mascot display. Mist it and bag it in the fridge overnight to keep the peeled areas from drying out.
