For the eyes, thin them to a warm glow but keep a thin ridge of skin for the pupil so the gaze looks focused rather than hollow. Step back often and view it lit to balance the light and dark masses.

   Etch fur and whiskers last

   With a fine pin tool or detail knife, scratch in short directional fur strokes following the muscle contours. Add the long whisker lines as shallow scratches radiating from the muzzle, keeping them light so the surface stays strong. Because these are shallow etches and not cutouts, the pumpkin holds together while still catching light.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop a bright LED puck or string light inside, never a candle, and set it low so light rises across the face. Place the pumpkin on a porch step at eye level for trick-or-treaters and let the amber glow build after dark. Mist the carved surface with water to freshen it between showings and shoot photos with the porch lights dimmed.
