Pick a tall pumpkin and clean the cavity

Choose a smooth, wide pumpkin with a flat working face so the whole dinosaur fits comfortably. Cut a lid from the bottom or back rather than the top so the design side stays clean, and have an adult handle the big knife. Scoop the insides and scrape the carving wall down to about one inch thick. A thinner wall makes the many cutouts far easier to push through cleanly.

Transfer the T. rex outline

Print or draw the full body so it fills most of the face, jaw toward one side and tail sweeping the other. Tape your stencil flat, smoothing the paper to follow the pumpkin curve, then poke the outline with a transfer tool or pushpin. Add extra dots along the tooth line and the small arms so those tricky spots are easy to follow. Peel the paper and connect the dots lightly with a marker before any blade touches the skin.

Cut the large open areas first

Start with the biggest interior shapes, the belly gap, the leg openings, and the space inside the jaw. Use a small carving saw and let the tool do the work with gentle strokes, keeping your free hand clear of the path. Removing these big pieces early relieves pressure on the shell so later fine cuts do not crack. Support each chunk with a finger from inside as it comes free so it drops out without tearing.

Carve the claws and tiny arms with bridges

The little arms and toe claws are narrow, so leave slim strips of uncut skin as bridges wherever two shapes nearly meet. Cut the outlines of these small pieces slowly with the tip of the saw or a detail blade. If a claw feels wobbly, stop and leave a bit more skin connecting it to the body. These bridges keep delicate points from snapping while still letting light frame them.

Save the teeth gap for last

The thin strip of pumpkin between the upper and lower rows of teeth is the most fragile part of the whole design. Cut it last, and approach from both ends with a small saw instead of pushing straight through the middle. Take short, patient strokes and let each tooth notch open on its own. Working inward from both sides keeps the strip from cracking down its length.

Light it and photograph

Drop in a battery LED light, warm white or amber, so the glow pours through the body and jaw. Set the pumpkin on a dark surface at dusk to make the cutouts pop against the shadows. If any edge looks dull, scrape it a touch thinner from inside to brighten the light. Rub a little petroleum jelly on cut edges to slow drying and keep the teeth crisp for photos.
