   Pick a firm pumpkin and thin the wall

Use a fine saw blade and rock it gently, letting the tool do the work rather than forcing it. Push each cut piece inward and out to keep the round edges clean.    Open the eyes, nose, and mouth

   Carve the round eye sockets, the nose slit, and the wide open mouth next, always cutting the enclosed shapes before the trailing drips. Keep the thin bridge of skin between the two eyes intact so the face holds its structure. Work slowly around the tooth points and leave them slightly chunky for strength. Save all the dangling drip fingers for the very end.

   Carve the drip extensions last

   Now cut the long narrow drips below the eyes and the mouth, working from the skull edge downward in one confident pull for each finger. Keep each drip a touch wider than it looks in the design so the tips do not snap. Support the pumpkin wall with your free hand as you go and take breaks to reposition. If a tip does feel loose, stop and leave a little extra skin at its base.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop a battery LED or two inside and skip real candles, since open flame near thin drip tips is a fire and scorch risk. Set the pumpkin at dusk on a porch chair or step and let the warm light pour through the round ears and mouth. Rotate it until the drips catch the glow evenly. Snap your photo in low light so the bright cutouts stand out against the dark skin.
