Pick and prep a smooth pumpkin

Choose a pumpkin with a broad, flat, blemish-free side big enough for a full standing dog. Wipe the surface clean and dry it so your stencil sticks. There is no need to open the top or gut it for this style, since you are not lighting it from inside. If you do want a faint interior glow later, an adult can cut a small back door and hollow it after the etching is done.

Transfer the Saint Bernard outline

Tape a home-printed stencil in place and mark the full body silhouette plus the internal patch boundaries on the back, saddle, and ears. Use a poking tool or transfer paper to trace the dog's outline, the leg separations, the muzzle, and the edges of each dark patch. Getting these patch lines placed accurately now is what will sell the breed later. Step back and check the proportions before removing the paper.

Score all the crisp edges first

With a small detail knife, an adult should lightly score along every outline and patch boundary you transferred. Cut only shallow, about an eighth of an inch deep, just enough to create a clean wall between light and dark zones. These scored lines stop your shaving tool from wandering and keep the two-tone borders sharp. Take your time around the face, ears, and the curve of the front legs.

Shave the pale coat to a tan glow

Use a ribbon or gouge tool to peel away just the outer orange skin inside the body areas meant to be light. Work down to the pale flesh a little at a time until those zones turn a soft tan. Keep the darker back, saddle, and ear patches completely untouched so they stay deep orange. Vary the depth slightly along the belly and legs to hint at fur texture.

Refine the face and fur detail

Come back with the detail knife to clean up the muzzle, define the eye, and add short directional strokes that suggest the coat lying down over the body. Keep the eye and inner ear as small untouched dark accents so the face has focus. Feather the edges where light coat meets a dark patch so the transition looks like fur rather than a hard sticker line. Blow out the shavings and check the contrast from a few feet away.

Seal it and stage it for daylight

Rub the shaved areas with a thin coat of petroleum jelly or a food-safe preservative to slow drying and keep the tan bright. Set the pumpkin on a bench or step where side daylight rakes across the surface, which makes the etched texture pop. This portrait reads by contrast, so it is at its best in the afternoon rather than after dark. Snap a photo the same day, since etched pumpkins fade fastest.
