Take your time here because clean outlines are what make the sculpt read.

   Peel the skin for shading

   Switch to loop and ribbon tools and remove the orange skin in the raised areas to expose the lighter flesh, working the whole face in layers. Peel shallow for mid tones on the cheeks and forehead, and go deeper in the eye sockets, under the brow, and beside the nose for stronger shadow. Leave the bandana and eye patch as mostly untouched dark skin so they pop. Carve the beard and mustache as flowing grooves, and shave the flesh thin near the mouth so it will glow when lit.

   Open the mouth last

   Once all the sculpting is done, cut a full opening through the gaping mouth so it becomes the brightest spot and the source of the spill. Cutting this last keeps the face rigid while you do the delicate peeling. Clean the edges so the lips look carved, not torn. Test fit an LED light inside to check the glow through your thinned areas.

   Stage the seed spill and photograph

   Drape the reserved stringy pulp and seeds from the open mouth down onto the table so it looks like a stream of vomit. Build the pile gradually and let a few seeds trail out to the edge for motion. Drop a battery LED inside, never a candle, since the thin walls and loose pulp are a fire risk. Shoot in a dim room so the peeled highlights and the lit mouth carry the joke.
