Pick your pumpkin and transfer the design

Choose a large pumpkin with a smooth, flat side facing where viewers will stand. Clean and dry the surface, then tape your unicorn profile stencil in place so it does not shift. Use a poking tool or pushpin to dot along every line, spacing dots close together on curves like the jaw and horn tip. Peel your stencil and connect the dots lightly with a marker so you can see the full outline before any cutting.

Hollow out and thin the carving wall

Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top so the stem stays intact and the pumpkin sits steady. Scoop out the seeds and pulp, then scrape the inside wall behind the design down to about one inch thick. A thinner wall is much easier to cut cleanly and lets more light through. Have an adult handle all the sharp tools during this step.

Cut the main head and neck opening

Using a small serrated carving saw, cut along the large silhouette first: the face, the muzzle, the throat, and the sweep of the neck. Work slowly and let the saw do the work rather than forcing it. Remove this big center piece as one clean chunk so the interior glows as a single open shape. Keep the jawline and muzzle edges crisp, since those curves define the unicorn.

Carve the horn and mane spikes from the tip down

Now shape the straight horn and the layered mane as individual pointed cutouts. Start each spike at its tip and cut downward, leaving a narrow uncut line of rind between neighboring strips so nothing collapses early. Finalize one strip fully before moving to the next, keeping each thin strip supported by the adjacent uncut section as you go. If a bridge feels fragile, leave it slightly wider rather than risk snapping it.

Clean edges and add a dim glow with peeling

Trim any ragged edges with a paring knife so the light lines look sharp. For extra depth, use a shallow scraping or peeling tool to shave the skin just inside the muzzle or along the mane roots, creating a soft dim orange band that frames the bright cutouts. Do not peel too much or you may cut through by accident. Rinse away debris and pat the pumpkin dry.

Light it and set the scene

Drop in one or two battery LED lights or a string of warm LEDs for even, safe brightness. Never use an open flame near thin mane strips. Set the pumpkin on a flat deck or step where the backlit silhouette faces your viewers, and shoot your photo at dusk when the glow reads strongest against the darker sky.
