This mid layer is the largest part of the design, so build it patiently before touching the bright spots.

   Carve the brightest highlights thinnest

   For the lit muzzle, the ridge of the back, and the glowing ground under the paws, shave the flesh much thinner so more light passes through. Work in small passes and hold a light inside frequently to judge the glow before you go too far. Keep thin bright areas connected to surrounding flesh so nothing crumbles. Stop shaving the moment a spot glows the gold you want.

   Cut through only the smallest openings

   Save any true cutouts, like the dark gaps inside the open snarling mouth and between the teeth, for last. Cut these small and leave thin bridges of skin to hold the fangs and claws in place, since fine points snap easily. Make these full cuts after all your shading is done so the shell stays strong while you work. Angle the blade slightly outward so light spills forward.

   Light it and photograph the porch

   Drop in a bright battery LED, never a candle, since the flame heat and the thin shaded areas do not mix. Set the pumpkin on the front porch at dusk and step back to check that the wolverine reads clearly from a distance. If any fur looks muddy, shave it a touch thinner to lift the glow. Snap your photo while the surrounding light is low so the amber-to-gold grading really pops.
