   Switch to a wider gouge and shave off the outer skin everywhere around the body, staying outside your score line. Work in shallow passes so you expose the pale flesh underneath for that dim orange glow. Keep the depth even so the background lights uniformly. Leave the gecko itself as untouched dark skin so it stands out as a silhouette.

   Etch the spots and toes

   With the fine linoleum cutter, carve each spot along the back and sides a little deeper than the background so they catch the most light. Etch the tiny toe lines and the dotted tail pattern the same way. These small cuts are the character of the piece, so go slow and keep them evenly spaced. Do not cut all the way through, since this design stays as relief.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop in a battery LED light and set the pumpkin in a dim spot to check the glow. The peeled background should shimmer softly while the spots read as bright points. Touch up any thin peeled areas that look dull by shaving a bit more flesh away. Shoot your photo at dusk on a porch or bench for the warmest effect.
