Pick and prep the pumpkin

Choose a tall, rounded pumpkin with one smooth, wide face for the dinosaur. Have an adult cut a lid from the back or bottom so the front face stays unbroken. Scoop the inside and thin the carving wall to about one inch with a scraper. A thinner, even wall makes the horn and tail strips much easier to cut cleanly.

Transfer your stencil

Tape a cartoon triceratops pattern to the front and poke the outlines with a pin or transfer tool. Mark the frill, the round eye, the three horns, the chunky body, and the tail as separate zones. Note which lines are thin bridges that must stay connected. Peel off the paper and check that every shape reads clearly before you cut.

Carve the three horns first

Start with the smallest, most fragile parts while the wall is still fully braced. Cut each of the three horn tips individually with a fine saw, working slowly so the narrow points do not snap. Leave short skin bridges where a horn meets the frill or face so nothing floats free. Support the shell with your free hand from inside as you finish each tip.

Open the frill and body last

Now cut the large frill sections behind the head and the open areas inside the body. These are the biggest holes, so save them for last to keep the pumpkin rigid. Cut the round eye as a small clean opening, then the tail as a thin swinging strip, leaving a bridge or two so it stays attached. Remove each piece by pushing gently outward.

Peel for mid-tone shading

Use a lino or ribbon tool to skin-peel a shallow layer along the frill edge and the belly for a soft, dim glow. This gives the flat cartoon body some depth without cutting all the way through. Keep peeled areas smooth and even so the light spreads gently. Wipe away shavings and check the effect against a light.

Light it and photograph

Drop in a battery LED, warm white or amber, and never a candle near the thin horns and tail. Set the pumpkin on a table away from drafts and let the frill and body cutouts throw their glow. Dim the room and shoot from the front to catch the bright eye and horns. Smear a little petroleum jelly on cut edges to slow drying and keep it fresh longer.
