Keep the legs and feet as thin peeled lines rather than open cuts so nothing snaps off. Save any full cut-through for last, after all the shading is done.

   Set a warm white LED inside or under the pumpkin and dim the room to check your glow. If a feather looks flat, shave it a little deeper until the light comes through. Rub a thin coat of petroleum jelly on the peeled areas to slow drying and keep the color rich. Shoot your photo slightly off to one side so the feather ribs cast soft shadows.
