Work symmetrically side to side to avoid weakening one area too soon.

   Cut the large torso and sneakers last

   Now open the biggest lit sections: the torso glow and the oversized sneakers at the bottom. Saving these for last means the pumpkin wall stayed rigid through all the delicate work. Cut the sneakers cleanly since they are the charming payoff detail, keeping the sole and lace lines as dark skin. Ease each large piece out slowly to avoid cracking the bridges above it.

   Light it and set it at porch height

   Drop in a battery LED, warm white or amber, and skip real candles near thin cutouts. Set the pumpkin up on a step or small table so trick-or-treaters can see the sneakers at eye level. Rub a little petroleum jelly on the cut edges to slow drying and keep the lines crisp. Snap your photo at dusk when the glow reads best against the darker sky.
