   Pick the pumpkin and plan the pose

   Choose a rounded pumpkin with a smooth, unblemished face that gives you a wide flat panel for the elephant. Keep the design centered and leave a good margin of untouched skin all around. A clear outline now makes the shading far easier later.

   Cut an access hole in the back of the pumpkin rather than the top so the front stays intact.    Transfer the outline and score it

   Tape your sketch or stencil over the panel and poke through the main lines with a pin, or trace them lightly with a dull tool. Connect the dots and go over the full elephant outline with a shallow scoring cut, just breaking the skin. Include the trunk, tusks, ear edge, and the gaps between the legs. Do not cut through yet, this is only your map.

   Peel the body for a mid glow

   With a lino or ribbon tool, shave the skin off the whole elephant body down to the pale flesh so it will glow dim orange. Take the ear down a touch thinner than the body so it reads as a separate plane. Keep the surface even and avoid gouging all the way through. Work slowly and rotate the pumpkin so your cutting hand stays comfortable.

   Deepen the edges and small cutouts

   Cut a little deeper along the trunk edge, the leg gaps, and the belly line to create crisp separation and brighter accents. If you want a bright eye or a sliver of light between the legs, make those true cutouts now, keeping them small so the shape holds. Leave bridges of skin where thin details meet the body so nothing snaps off. Save any larger openings for the very end.

   Light it and photograph

   Drop in a battery LED, warm white or amber looks best for this glow. Set it on a low pillar so light spreads up through the body evenly. Check from a few feet back and touch up any spots that read too dark by peeling a little more skin. Shoot in the dark on a porch step for that cozy nighttime look.
