   Start with the smallest openings, such as the ghost's mouth and any eye shapes, using a fine saw blade and gentle sawing motions. Working small to large keeps the pumpkin strong while you handle the trickiest cuts. Let the blade do the work and avoid twisting it, which can crack a thin section. Push each freed piece inward or outward carefully so you do not tear a neighboring edge.

   Cut the tendrils from the bottom up

   Carve the three drooping tendrils one at a time, working from the bottom of the sheet upward. Leave at least a quarter inch of rind between each tendril so no single strand snaps before the others are done. Support the surrounding rind with your free hand as you cut, and take breaks to check that the bridges are holding. Save the largest body opening, the arms and head, for last so the panel stays rigid the whole time.

   Light it and take your photo

   Drop in a battery LED or a string of warm LEDs, never a real candle, since the wide cutout can heat up. Set the light low and toward the back so it glows evenly through the arms and head. If any edge looks too sharp, soften it with a quick scrape for a ghostly gradient. Photograph it at dusk against a dark background so the outstretched limbs pop.
