   Start with the smallest cutouts, the two eyes and the mouth, using a small serrated carving saw. Working small to large keeps the pumpkin sturdy while you have the most material to brace against. Saw slowly and let the blade do the work, pushing the pieces gently outward when each shape is free. Keep the mouth as one open smile so it stays clean and simple.

   Cut the ghost body

   Now saw the full ghost silhouette, the head, arms, and the wavy bottom hem. Cut the arms and the scalloped hem carefully so the little curves keep their shape, and leave the narrow points slightly rounded so they do not snap. This large opening is your brightest area, so save it for last once the smaller cuts are done. Remove the freed body piece in one gentle push.

   Peel a soft glow border

   For a little depth, use a lino or ribbon tool to peel a thin layer of skin just inside the ghost's edge, or around the eyes and mouth. Removing only the outer skin, not cutting through, gives a dim orange halo that makes the ghost look like it is floating. Keep these peeled areas shallow and even. Wipe away shavings and check the look before lighting.

   Light it and photograph

   Set a battery-operated LED tealight or a small puck light inside, never a candle, since the thin walls and open cuts get warm. Place the pumpkin on a porch bench or step where the dark background lets the ghost shine. Group it with other cutout pumpkins for a friendly display. Snap your photo at dusk when the glow reads best against the fading light.
