The Swooping Jagged-Mouth Ghost

From pumpkin to porch

1. 1

Pick and prep a tall pumpkin

Choose a large, fairly round pumpkin with a smooth front panel so the sweeping shape has room to spread. Cut a lid from the bottom or the back rather than the top so the stem stays intact and the front face stays clean. Scoop the inside until the front wall is about one inch thick, scraping evenly so light passes through consistently. A thinner wall makes the big cutouts easier and the glow brighter.

2. 2

Transfer the ghost and score the perimeter

Tape your stencil flat against the front and poke the outline with a pin or transfer tool, following the mouth, eyes, arms, and flowing robe. Before cutting anything, lightly score the entire outer edge of the design with a shallow pass. This lets you see how much rind margin remains, especially where the outstretched arms reach toward the pumpkin's sides. If an arm tip runs too close to the edge, nudge the whole design in a little now.

3. 3

   Open the face features first

Start with the small interior shapes: the eyes and the zigzag mouth. Cut the eyes as clean openings, then work the jagged mouth one triangle at a time so you keep control of each point. Leave a slim strip of rind between the mouth teeth so the zigzag stays crisp and does not collapse into one big hole. These smaller cuts warm up your hand before the large body opening.

4. 4

Carve the body and robe as one glowing shape

Now open the large robe and body area beneath the face. Cut from the inside of each shape toward your scored lines using slow, steady saw strokes, removing rind in manageable chunks rather than one giant piece. Keep the narrow orange bridges that separate the arms from the body intact, since those dark strips are what make the figure read as a ghost instead of one blob. Support the pumpkin wall with your free hand well away from the blade.

5. 5

   Cut the reaching arms last

Save the swept-back, talon-like arm tips for the very end, because they sit closest to the pumpkin's edges and weaken the wall as you go. Work slowly here and leave a little extra rind at each fingertip so the thin points do not snap. If a tip feels fragile, keep it as a peeled shallow area instead of a full cutout so it still glows without breaking. Round any ragged inside edges with a small loop tool.

6. 6

   Light it and photograph

Drop in one or two battery LED lights, warm white or amber, and skip candles so the thin sections stay safe. Set the pumpkin in a dim room and check that the whole ghost glows evenly, adding a second light low inside if the lower robe looks dark. Rub a little petroleum jelly on cut edges to slow drying and keep the shapes sharp for photos. Shoot from slightly to one side to show the depth of the cutouts.
