The Darwin Fish pumpkin stencil is a free printable PDF template. Print it, tape the pattern on, and trace it onto your pumpkin. The iconic Darwin fish emblem fills this pumpkin stencil as a horizontal fish silhouette with small walking legs at the bottom, the word DARWIN lettered inside the body using bold block capitals separated by vertical post bridges. Both the fish background and the letter interiors are cut through, so the orange bridges spelling out DARWIN glow as solid bars when lit. Carve the background fish outline opening first, then cut each letter interior separately to keep the thin vertical bridges from flexing and cracking. It makes a fun jack-o'-lantern design for Halloween night. It is rated Advanced. Actual time varies with preparation, pumpkin size and experience. Fine details and narrow supports need careful planning. Follow the cutting and shading key in this designβs PDF.

Frequently asked questions
Can I resize this stencil?βΎ
Yes. The PDF is vector so it scales cleanly. Print the pattern at 100% for a 7 to 10 inch pumpkin, 130% for 11 to 13 inch, or 150% for a giant. Use your printer's "Fit to page" or "Custom scale" setting.
What kind of paper works best?βΎ
Standard 20 lb letter or A4 printer paper is fine. Heavier paper is harder to bend around the pumpkin curve. If your printer supports it, set the quality to 'best' so the lines are crisp.
How long will the carved pumpkin last?βΎ
Usually 5 to 10 days. Coat all cut surfaces with petroleum jelly and store the pumpkin somewhere cool overnight. Avoid direct sun. Battery LED pumpkin lights produce no heat and help it last longer.
Can I sell pumpkins carved with this stencil?βΎ
Yes, the carved pumpkin you make is yours. The license covers personal and small-scale commercial carving (selling carved pumpkins, photographing them, posting on social). You may not resell the PDF file itself.
What if my printer doesn't print the whole stencil?βΎ
Set 'Page scaling' to 'Fit' in the print dialog and uncheck 'Auto-rotate'. If it still cuts off, the design includes 0.25" of safe-area margin so a small crop won't ruin it.
How to carve this stencil
- Cut the outer fish body outline first, removing the large background area inside the silhouette in sections to avoid flexing the wall.
- Cut the small walking-leg shapes at the bottom individually, working from the body downward toward each foot.
- Carve each letter opening in DARWIN from left to right, cutting D first: remove the interior oval cleanly, keeping the top and bottom crossbars solid.
- For letters with vertical dividers (A, R, W, N), always cut the enclosed counter spaces before cutting along the dividing post.
- Finish by cutting the X crossing the tail fin; approach from each end toward the intersection to keep the cross crisp.

AdvancedFancy Fins Pumpkin Stencil
A fancy fantail goldfish glides across the pumpkin with billowing fins, a sweeping double tail, and a body covered in overlapping scale rows. This is a continuous-wall shading design: the skin is shaved away at varying depths so fins glow softly and each scale reads in relief, with no pierced holes. Rated hard for its texture work, it goes best if you outline the fish first, clear the background layer, then carve the scales one row at a time.
AdvancedTidal Dancer Pumpkin Stencil
An elegant seahorse posed upright with a ridged, segmented body, a ribbed fan fin on its back, and a tail that coils into a tight spiral. This is a shading pattern: you carve away skin at varying shallow depths to sculpt the plates, fin ribs, and curl while the wall stays solid. Rated hard for its fine detail, it rewards a light touch; work the tiny tail spiral with a small gouge last.
AdvancedElegant Seahorse Pumpkin Stencil
An elegant seahorse curls down the pumpkin in profile, its coronet, snout, banded belly plates, back fin, and spiral tail all rendered in carved relief. This is a shading design: the body is shaved to a pale glow while the plate lines and outline are left or scraped at different depths for dimension, with no pierced openings. Rated hard for its fine segmentation, shave the belly bands one at a time and keep each dividing ridge intact.
AdvancedSpotted Eagle Ray
A spotted eagle ray glides diagonally across the pumpkin, its wide wings dotted with rows of round spots, a long whip tail trailing off behind, and a curled loop near the tail base. The whole creature is rendered by etching the skin: outlines and spots are shaved to glow softly while the wall stays sealed. Rated hard for the fine linework; carve the spots with a small round gouge and keep your outline strokes shallow and consistent.
AdvancedGentle Giant Pumpkin Stencil
A whale shark glides across the pumpkin in full profile, its wide flat head, tall tail fin, and back covered in the species' signature spots and ridge lines. This is a shading design with no pierced holes: you shave the skin inside the body while leaving orange skin for the spots, gill slits, and stripes. Shave the large body sections to an even depth first, then re-crisp the spot edges with a detail knife.
AdvancedSpotted Whale Shark
A whale shark glides across the pumpkin, its wide flat head, tall tail fin, and body covered in the species' signature grid of pale spots, with a few bubbles drifting nearby. The shark's outline and spots are shaved to glow while the surrounding skin stays dark, so no section is pierced through. Do the long body outline first, then the spots; a small round scoop or melon-baller keeps all those dots consistent.
