Follow the direction of the fur with short, flicking strokes so the coat looks layered rather than smooth. Keep thin slivers of untouched skin between clumps of fur to hold the black-to-rust contrast.

   Carve the bright cutouts last

   Now cut fully through the chest blaze, the muzzle, the tongue, and the bright catchlights in the eyes. Save these big openings for last so the wall stays strong while you work the detail. Leave narrow bridges of skin inside the chest fur so the blaze breaks into strands instead of one blank hole. Round the inside edges of each cutout slightly so the light spreads softly instead of showing hard lines.

   Light it and photograph

   Set a battery LED puck or string inside, never a candle, since the thin walls scorch easily and this project took real effort. Test in a dark room and adjust the light position so the cream chest and muzzle burn brightest. If any dark zone leaks too much light, dab the inside with a little petroleum jelly or add a scrap of peel back. Shoot at dusk on a porch step for the warm glow you see in the reference.
