Make slow, straight passes and let the blade do the work instead of forcing it. Clear each cut piece out before moving to the next letter.

   Open the wide letters and clean edges

   Now cut through the larger open-sided letters like L, V, S, M, T, and C, saving the widest openings for last so the face does not weaken early. Push the freed pieces out from inside to avoid chipping the front edges. Run your blade back through any rough cuts to make the letter walls crisp and even. Trim the inside edges slightly toward the back so more light spills through each letter.

   Light it and photograph

   Set one or two battery LED lights inside, never a candle, and aim them so all three rows glow evenly. If the bottom row looks dim, tilt or raise a light so MATTER reads as brightly as BLACK. Photograph at dusk against a plain background so the letters stand out. Mist the cut edges with water and refrigerate overnight to keep the words sharp for a few days.
