MAGA Letters Above Five Stars Pumpkin

From pumpkin to porch

1. 1

   Plan and size the layout

Sketch the word and the five stars on paper at the exact width of your pumpkin's flattest face. Keep all four letters the same height and all five stars the same size so the design reads as a tidy grid. Center the row of stars directly under the letters with matching gaps between them. A low, wide pumpkin gives you the broad flat panel this design needs.

2. 2

Open the back and clean it out

Cut a hatch in the back of the pumpkin rather than the top so the front face stays smooth and unbroken. Scrape the inside wall behind your design down to about one inch thick so light passes through easily. An even wall thickness keeps every letter and star glowing at the same brightness. Let an adult handle the large opening cut.

3. 3

   Transfer your stencil

Tape your paper pattern flat against the front and poke the outlines with a pin or transfer tool. Go slowly around the star points so each of the five stays crisp and symmetrical. Pull the paper and connect the dots lightly with a marker if it helps. Double check that the letter counters, the holes inside the A's, are marked so you remember to keep those bridges.

4. 4

   Cut the letters first

Using a fine carving saw, cut the four block letters, working from the center of each shape outward. Leave the small inner triangles of each A attached as bridges so the letters do not collapse. Take short, gentle strokes and let the saw do the work instead of forcing it. Keep the cut pieces in place for now to support the surrounding shell.

5. 5

Saw each star, then pop as one

Cut each of the five stars individually, tracing every point carefully, but leave the thin connecting skin between them in place while you saw. Only once all five stars are fully outlined should you press them out together, supporting the row from behind with your fingers. This keeps the fragile walls between stars from tearing early. Push the letter pieces out at the same stage, from the inside if you can.

6. 6

   Light it and photograph

Set a battery LED against the back wall rather than in the center so the wide starline lights evenly instead of fading at the ends. Use amber for a warm dusk glow, and avoid open flames on a design with this much cut-out area. Trim any rough edges from inside for clean light shapes. Photograph it at twilight against a simple background so the glowing grid stands out.
