The three wave apertures must each remain attached at both side edges so no rind strip becomes a floating island. What happens if I accidentally cut through one of the side connections?

The rind band that loses a side connection becomes a floating strip, which will eventually sag or fall away. You can stabilize it immediately by applying a wide strip of strong tape on the inside of the pumpkin wall bridging the broken connection. It will hold for a display evening or two but is not a permanent repair.

How much wave curve is too much to be structurally safe?

A wave that rises or falls more than about a third of the band height can result in very narrow rind bridges at the crest or trough points within the wave aperture itself. Keep the amplitude modest, roughly a quarter to a third of the band height, so the wave looks dynamic but the rind stays uniformly thick above and below the cut.

Can I display this pumpkin outdoors in rain?

Painted pumpkins can tolerate light moisture if sealed, but prolonged rain will soften the cut edges and eventually bubble or peel the paint. If rain is likely, display under a covered overhang or bring the pumpkin inside during downpours. A light matte sealer applied before display helps resist brief exposure to moisture.
