   Leave the pine trees dark

   Do not touch the skin on the pine trees or the hill edges in front of them. That untouched skin will stay dark and form crisp black silhouettes against the glowing sky and hills. Keep the tree trunks and pointed tops attached to the surrounding skin so they stay strong. These dark shapes are what give the scene its depth.

   Drill the star field

   Fit a drill with two small bits and make the star holes last, once the shading is done. Vary the sizes so a few stars near the moon read larger and the rest fade smaller toward the edges. Drill straight in with gentle pressure so the fronts stay clean and do not blow out. Keep spacing loose and scattered rather than in rows.

   Light it and photograph

   Set a cool white LED inside to keep the moonlit mood, since warm bulbs push the scene orange. Test in a dark room and rotate the light until the moon and hills glow evenly and the stars sparkle. Wipe the shaded areas with a damp cloth and coat cut edges with petroleum jelly to slow drying. Shoot at dusk on a step or porch for the best contrast.
