Mark which areas are moon, stars, hills, and trees so you do not lose track once you start peeling.

   Peel the moon and starbursts first

   Using a ribbon or gouge tool, shave off just the orange skin inside the crescent moon so the pale flesh shows. These are your brightest features, so peel them a touch deeper than everything else without breaking through the wall. Do the same for each star and starburst, keeping their points crisp. Work slowly and keep the surrounding sky untouched so the shapes pop.

   Shade the hills and ridges

   Peel the rolling hills at a medium depth so they read lighter than the sky but softer than the moon. Leave thin unpeeled lines along each hilltop to separate one ridge from the next, which gives the layered horizon its depth. Vary your pressure so distant hills stay dimmer and closer ones glow a bit brighter. This gradient is what makes the scene feel three dimensional.

   Detail the pine trees

   Etch the pine tree silhouettes into the hills, keeping each tree connected to the flesh around it since nothing here is cut through. Use the tip of a small gouge to notch the branch rows so the trees look feathered rather than solid blobs. Leave narrow unpeeled gaps between overlapping trees so they stay distinct when lit. Take your time; the trees are the finest detail and reward patience.

   Light it and photograph

   Set the pumpkin down over a battery LED, ideally a warm flicker bulb, and dim the room to check your depths. If a hill or star looks too faint, shave it a little thinner until it glows the way you want. Place it on a porch rail or step where the whole wide panorama is visible. Shoot at dusk so the etched glow reads against the darker sky.
